（ひぶせだるま）

At Temple Junshin-Ji 順心寺
兵庫県西宮市 Hyogo prefecture, Nishinomiya Town

Combined with a prayer for the no more war !

In this temple, there was a great statue of Daruma before WW II, but it was later given to a temple in Kobe and then Tokyo.
Kobe was destroyed by the war in 昭和２０年３月１７日と６月５日. More than 56.000 people of Kobe perished.

The head priest of Junshin-Ji later lent his Daruma statue to a temple in Kobe, which had not been completely destroyed.
The head priest died very suddenly after that and the Daruma statue never returned.




But after 60 years "in exile", this statue finally returned.
The present priest named it again, this time "fire-preventing Daruma", in the hope for no mor war in the world.

His father was the poet Kuroyanagi Shooha 黒柳召波 (1727 - 1771). Kurekoma published a haiku collection of his father for his 7th death anniversary, 春泥句集 Shundei Kushu.
Korekoma was a student of Yosa Buson

Walkers Paradise in Mihara Town, with a BIG DARUMA

For three days of the duration of the New Year Celebrations and Market the road from the station to the Shrine will be a paradise for shoppers.



“だるま市”として親しまれている「三原神明（しんめい）市」が８日、３日間の日程で三原市のＪＲ三原駅周辺を会場に始まった。やぐらの上にはシンボルの巨大だるま（高さ約４メートル、重さ約１８０キロ）がお目見え。駅北側の市道約２キロが歩行者天国となり、家族連れらでにぎわった。

　沿道には約４００の露店が並び、地元で手作りされた細長い「三原だるま」、太いひげとまゆ毛がりりしい「玉島だるま」（倉敷市）、鶴のまゆに亀のひげを持つ「高崎だるま」（群馬県）などがずらり。

There is a famous collection of 50 Daruma dolls of various sizes.
達磨五十体.
It was made by Takeda Kasendoo. 竹田花川洞　who ws born around 1901. He was originally a painter.


Before the war, there was also a collection of one hundred Daruma, most probably selected by Kido Chuutaroo 木戸忠太郎.

Tamashima, a place near my home in Okayama, has started the Daruma production for the New Year Sales 2008!

This Good Luck Daruma is made in memory of the famous Zen monk and poet Ryokan, who trained for ten years at the Zen Temple Entsuu-ji in Tamashima, see my LINK below.


「招福」願いだるま作り　玉島で最盛期




家内安全や無病息災、商売繁盛などを願う正月の縁起物「招福だるま」の生産が、全国有数の産地・倉敷市玉島地区で最盛期を迎えた。「来年も福多い年に」と、一つ一つに願いを込めながら作業が進められている。

　張り子作りから絵付けまで手作業で仕上げる玉島福だるま製造所（同市玉島阿賀崎）では、高さ１１センチのものから同７５センチで胴回りが２メートルの特大サイズまで、大小１６種類の生産を手掛ける。

　同製造所は来年２月までに約１万個生産し、西日本各地の寺社に出荷する。

Kintarō (金太郎, often translated as"Golden Boy")
is a folk hero from Japanese folklore. A child of superhuman strength, he was raised by a mountain hag on Mount Ashigara. He became friendly with the animals of the mountain, and later, after catching Shutendouji, the terror of the region around Mount Ooe, he became a loyal follower of Minamoto no Yorimitsu under the new name Sakata Kintoki (坂田公時). He is a popular figure in noh and kabuki drama, and it is a custom to put up a Kintarō doll on Boy's Day in the hope that boys will become equally brave and strong.

Kintarō is supposedly based on a real man, named Sakata Kintoki, who lived during the Heian period and probably came from what is now the city of Minami-ashigara. He served as a retainer for the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu and became well known for his abilities as a warrior. As with many larger-than-life individuals, his legend has grown with time.
