Kurama Stone

Kurama Stone, Kurama Ishi 鞍馬石

This is a kind of granite stone which is found in the area of Mt. Kurama in Kyoto. The outside is of a light brown/orange color. It is used for large stepping stones, stone lanterns, water basins and decorative stones in a garden.

This kind of stone is also called "sabi ishi さび石" rusty stone, because it has a high concentration of pyrrhotite, which provides the color.


The same type of stone is also found in Yamanashi prefecture, near the Kai Yamato Station on the JR Chuo Line. Here it is called Koshu Kurama Stone, Kooshuu Kurama Ishi 甲州鞍馬石. It is a biottite granite.


When the surface is carved, it shows a white part of the stone. It is used for decorations of rather artistical art, sometimes even our Daruma san, as you can see in the photo below.
